Shahid Afridi One of Cricket’s biggest mysteries has finally been resolved As many fans have long doubted,
Shahid Afridi is not as young as official records have through all these years. Afridi himself made revelations in his autobiographical game changer released this week in India and Pakistan.
In the chapter on the call to Pakistan’s senior teams in October 1996, Afridi wrote that it was born in 1975 The official record, including the player profile page of ESPNcricinfo, records his date of birth as March 1, 1980.
Afridi debuted in the ODI Tri-Series tournament in Nairobi, and most famously, the first hit an international cricket with a 37-ball 100-stroke.
The record was kept for over 17 years and was even more outrageous to the fact that it was achieved at the age of sixteen. Except now, we know, he was not.
Still, Afridi only deepens the confusion in his book on the next line.
“If he was born in 1975, it would make him 20 or 21 at the time of innings, not 19 as he wrote.
He arrived in Nairobi from the Caribbean where he was playing in a series under 19 for Pakistan-which now suggests that he was not under 19 years old. Although retrospectively added to the performance at this season’s PSL,
Afridi has long retired from the international game. So he played 8 games in Multan Sultans,-Old.
1975 means he was 34 or 35 years old when he suddenly retired from test cricket in 2010. It also means that he was 40 or 41 instead of 36 when he finally made his last game for Pakistan in the 2016 World T20.
Fans will remember from the modern Afridi teammates another common admission of real age. After leading Pakistan to a victory in the unforgettable World T20 in 2009, Younis Khan announced that he was 34 years old and said
“This kind of cricket is too old,” and retired from the format. According to his official record, Younis was 31 years old when he spoke. In fact, the number 75 in his ODI shirt is the real year of his birth, which by chance is the same as Afridi’s.
